Tribunal orders employer to publicly apologise for sexual harassment

The Tribunal for Anti-Sexual Harassment has ordered a male employer to issue a public apology for the physical sexual harassment of his female employee.

According to the Women, Family, and Community Development Ministry, the apology was requested by the complainant.

The tribunal’s decision was issued within 60 days from the first hearing date, which was on May 23, following provisions under Section 19(1) of the Anti-Sexual Harassment Act 2022 [Act 840].

The ministry added that this case was the first complaint involving physical sexual harassment by a male employer towards a female employee.

It said that after considering the evidence and testimony presented, the tribunal found that the complainant proved the respondent had committed sexual harassment against her.

“Therefore, the tribunal ordered the respondent to issue an apology statement as requested by the complainant,” the ministry said in a statement today.

The Tribunal for Anti-Sexual Harassment provides an alternative channel to civil courts for handling sexual harassment complaints quickly, easily, and affordably.

Victims of sexual harassment were urged to file complaints at the tribunal’s counter at the ministry or contact Talian Kasih at 15999.
