Second victim of poisoned crackers incident dies

Another victim of the poisoned crackers incident died today while undergoing treatment at the Penang Hospital’s Paediatric Intensive Care Unit.

Muhammad Luth Syauqi Nur Sufyan, two, died two days after his older brother’s passing.

The boy’s mother, Nurain Hasnorizal, 25, said Luth breathed his last at 1.24pm.

Both siblings had been receiving treatment at the hospital since last Sunday after consuming snacks believed to be laced with rat poison in Kampung Padang Ubi, Labu Besar, Kulim in Kedah.

However, Muhammad Akil Syauqi, three, died at 8.40am on Wednesday after 78 hours of fighting for his life.

Nurain said the autopsy for her youngest son would be conducted today before the body is taken back to their hometown and laid to rest near his brother’s grave.

Despite her deep sorrow and pain from losing another child, Nurain said she accepted Luth’s passing as fate.

“I accept this as fate. Let him be with his brother rather than suffer here... all his pain is gone now,” said the distraught mother.

Media previously reported that the two children fell critically ill after consuming the snacks, believed to have been placed on a fence by an orchard owner to trap monkeys.

Their mother found out about the incident at 11am on the same day when her children started vomiting and foaming at the mouth.

Grandmother accepts loss

The siblings’ grandmother Saadiah Yaacob, 62, expressed her sorrow but accepted the loss of her second grandchild today.

“I’m very sad to have lost two grandchildren in the space of two days… but I have to accept it having taken care of them from birth.

“He’s passed… after the poisoning, I kept praying both would recover… but they have gone now.

“My younger grandson passed about 1 pm… he’s still at the hospital and will be taken to Kampung Padang Ubi, Kulim and then to Kampung Banggol Berangan, Baling where he will be laid to rest beside his elder brother at the Muslim cemetery there,” she said when contacted today.
