Saifuddin: Unislamic to recite qunut nazilah over Wan Fayhsal's suspension

Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has condemned the opposition for reciting the qunut nazilah as a retaliatory act in solidarity with Machang MP Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Kamal, who was suspended from Parliament yesterday.

Saifuddin called it an extreme political stance that should be rejected despite the political differences between the government and the opposition.

“I say this is an example of extreme political practice where political differences continue to be used as a basis to pray for (others’) destruction. This is not an Islamic practice,” he said in a press conference in Putrajaya today.

Qunut nazilah is a supplication made during times of war for Allah’s help against calamities and oppression.

Saifuddin was responding to media inquiries on whether the government viewed the recitation of qunut nazilah by Jasin MP Zulkifli Ismail as directed at the administration.

Yesterday, the Dewan Rakyat suspended Wan Fayhsal from any Parliamentary duties for six months.

The decision came after Wan Fayhsal cited an anonymous letter during parliamentary debates on July 1, that purportedly maligns civil servants using unverified information.

Elaborating further, Saifuddin said that the recitation of qunut nazilah is done after prayers to seek help from Allah.

Citing the Palestine-Israel conflict, he said that those situations are usually the basis of such a prayer to be recited instead of using it against political opponents in bad faith.

“Reciting it in Parliament clearly shows he’s trying to hide behind parliamentary immunity but I want to urge Malaysians, including Muslims, to view this matter with a clear heart and know that even though we differ in politics, it should not be considered as a difference in faith,” he added.
