Umno denies rumours of 'cooperation talks' with PAS

Umno has denied rumours of alleged formal discussions between the party and PAS for a new cooperation.

Its secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said while such talks may arise between party members or supporters, no formal discussions were held among the parties’ leaders.

“I don’t even know as Umno’s secretary-general, if there was any such discussion it should be between the leadership of both parties.

“I (also) heard that PAS leaders are discussing with Pakatan Harapan, (so) they can also discuss,” he said during a press conference in Kuala Lumpur this morning.

Asyraf (above) was responding to an Utusan Malaysia report today of purported talks between PAS and Umno leaders to discuss cooperation ahead of the 16th general election.

PAS information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari revealed this, claiming a series of meetings with Umno leaders had taken place recently.

The Pasir Mas MP claimed the meetings were held informally between the key leaders of both parties, giving hope to efforts towards reconciling Malay voters.

‘Don’t trust PAS’

On July 8, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the party would not cooperate with PAS as long as Abdul Hadi Awang remains its president.

He said his previous experience working with the Islamist party led to the decision.

Umno and PAS were once part of a collaboration called Muafakat Nasional in 2019.

However, the alliance unravelled the following year when PAS also sought to work with Bersatu in Perikatan Nasional.

The Bagan Datuk MP also said PAS did not honour the many joint decisions the parties made together.

“PAS has been lying from the beginning until now. I am a living witness to a four-point discussion with Hadi. We agreed face to face, but later we disagreed.

“Don’t believe them, as long as that person is president. Don’t expect us to cooperate with a party that rides on Islam,” Zahid said as quoted by Sinar Harian.
