Stay away from tomorrow's anti-govt rally in Tambun, cops warn

Police today warned the public against taking part in an anti-government rally in Tambun, Perak tomorrow as it will be an illegal gathering.

Ipoh district police chief Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad said a notice submitted by rally organiser Save Malaysia Movement Secretariat to police on July 24 was found to be incomplete for it failed to obtain permission from the venue owner.

Thus, he said, the notice did not fulfil requirements set by the Peaceful Assembly Act (PAA) 2012.

“Thus, police advise the public not to participate in this rally as it is an illegal gathering.

“Strong action will be taken against anyone found to take part in the rally because it did not acquire permission from the venue owner, as required by PAA,” Abang Zainal said in a statement.

Tambun is the parliamentary constituency held by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, the main target of the Save Malaysia 2.0 rallies.

It would be the second rally organised by the movement after the prime minister’s official residence in Putrajaya last month, where they demanded that the government heed a list of demands.

Anwar when met by reporters in Kuala Lumpur this afternoon was indifferent when asked to comment on the planned protest rally.

“There will be (a rally)? It’s okay,” he said.

The rally organiser in a press conference on July 17 said at least 3,000 people are expected to join the protest.

They highlighted five demands: rejecting Anwar’s administration, lowering the price of fuel and goods, fighting corruption and abuse of power, returning media freedom, and guaranteeing the sovereignty and safety of the country.
