Landslides strike India’s Kerala, eight killed, hundreds feared trapped

At least eight people, including a child, have died and hundreds are feared trapped in landslides in India’s Kerala state, local media said today.

Massive landslides brought on by heavy monsoon showers buried villages and cut off roads in the hilly Wayanad district today, German news agency dpa quoted a report by The Hindu.

Eight bodies were found and at least 70 injured have been taken to hospital, Kerala Health Minister Veena George said.

She feared the death toll could rise but the focus was on rescue operations, which was being hampered by continuous rain.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was “distressed” by the landslides.

“My thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones and prayers with those injured,” he wrote on X.

“Rescue ops are underway to assist all those affected,” he added.
