After Hamas leader's slaying, Putrajaya vows to remain vocal

Following the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, Putrajaya has vowed to remain vocal on the efforts to free Palestinians from oppression.

This stand was relayed by government spokesperson Fahmi Fadzil following the weekly cabinet meeting.

“The cabinet strongly condemns the killing of Ismail and stands in solidarity with the people of Palestine.

“The cabinet also conveys its condolences to the former Palestinian prime minister’s family and urges that an immediate investigation is conducted to bring the responsible parties to justice.

“The government will remain vocal in expressing support as well as cooperating with other countries in the efforts to free the people of Palestine from all forms of oppression,” he added in a statement.

Earlier, the Foreign Ministry also issued a statement on Malaysia condemning the killing of Ismail and calling for an investigation.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has been vociferous in opposing Israel’s military aggression against Palestine since the onset.

At a rally in solidarity with Palestinians in Kuala Lumpur last year, Anwar also revealed that he had received threats due to his unwavering stand on the matter.

“I have received numerous threats… and I told them, you have chosen the wrong person. As long as I have the trust of the people, I will not succumb to such threats.

“We will continue to fight,” he added.

In May, Anwar said he met Ismail in Qatar and conveyed his condolences to the Hamas leader, who lost several family members in an air strike a month earlier.
