Malaysia “strongly condemns” the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, said the Foreign Affairs Ministry.

Putrajaya also urged for an immediate and thorough investigation into the death and for those responsible to be brought to justice.

“Malaysia also urges all parties to exercise restraint while facts surrounding the assassination are being established,” it added in a brief statement this afternoon.

Malaysian politicians from both sides of the divide also condemned the killing and paid tribute to the slain leader.

“It is a big loss for the Islamic world but his fighting spirit will not fade. This loss would give rise to a new generation who will fight for justice and freedom for the Palestinian people,” he added.

Amanah president Mohamad Sabu said he was “shocked and saddened” over the news of Ismail’s death.

“Not only was he a close friend, but also a leader who tirelessly struggled for the freedom and well-being of the Palestinian people who are under the continued oppression of Israel.

“He had dedicated his life to championing basic rights and justice for his people, often facing extraordinary challenges with courage,” he said in a Facebook post.

PAS chastises Israel

Meanwhile, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang trained his guns on Israel.

“May Allah bless his (Ismail’s) soul and reward him as a martyr.

“The whole world must condemn Israel’s cowardly act. Not only are they responsible for this (Ismail’s death) but also the war crimes in Gaza.

“The Palestinian struggle is everlasting, with never-ending support,” he said.

Ismail was in Iran to attend the swearing-in ceremony of the country’s new president, Masoud Pezeshkian.

Dewan Rakyat speaker Johari Abdul

Dewan Rakyat speaker Johari Abdul, who was also in Iran for the swearing-in ceremony, expressed his condolences to the people of Palestine over Ismail’s death.

“The Dewan Rakyat condemns this violence and I wish to express my solidarity with the Palestinians and pray for the oppression against them to cease immediately,” he said.

DAP MP Syahredzan Johan described it as “an extra-judicial killing which violates international law”.

“Israel once again shows that it acts with impunity and blatantly disregards international norms and standards, and human rights,” he said on X.
