The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has criticised Instagram’s parent company Meta for taking down a post from Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s account.

The post featured him meeting the late Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in May.

The removal notification from Instagram stated that the post contained “symbols, praise, or support of people and organisations that we define as dangerous”.

The PMO shared screenshots of Instagram’s notification in a Facebook post today.

“This action clearly shows discrimination against the situation in Palestine and the country’s leaders.

“Therefore, we demand an explanation and urge Meta to apologise regarding this matter,” the post read.

The posts of Anwar and Ismail were uploaded again on Facebook and Instagram at around 8.30pm.

This is not the first time posts by Malaysian parties featuring Hamas have been removed.

Posts on Anwar meeting Ismail were taken down previously but later restored, with Meta stating they were “removed in error”.

Continuous killings

Earlier today, it was reported that Ismail was killed in his residence in Tehran, Iran.

Hamas announced his death on Telegram, saying he was killed in a “treacherous Zionist raid” after attending the inauguration ceremony of new Iranian president Masoud Pezeshkian.

In April, the Israeli regime in Gaza reportedly killed Ismail’s three sons, Hazeem, Amir, and Mohamad, and four of his grandchildren.

Anwar condemned the action, calling it a “disgusting attack” that demonstrated the Zionist regime’s lack of interest in a ceasefire as demanded by the UN Security Council.
