Umno will start legal proceedings to claim RM100m from Rembia rep

Umno will initiate legal proceedings against Rembia assemblyperson Muhammad Jailani Khamis to claim RM100 million in compensation for defecting.

Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the move was agreed upon at the party’s supreme council meeting tonight.

“The meeting deliberated and agreed to initiate legal action to claim RM100 million compensation as per the agreement set for the party’s representatives who have defected,” he said.

He was speaking to reporters after the supreme council meeting chaired by Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi at the party’s headquarters in Kuala Lumpur.

On July 16, PAS announced that Jailani joined the Islamist party. Then, on July 19, Jailani said he decided to leave the ruling Malacca coalition government as Chief Minister Ab Rauf Yusoh broke promises made in the 2021 state election manifesto.

The two-term assemblyperson is serving a six-year suspension from Umno after he was seen attending a high-profile Perikatan Nasional event in Johor in September 2023.

In a video on social media on July 20, Asyraf presented the original contract signed by Jailani which stipulated that representatives must relinquish their membership if they go against the party’s decision, and pay RM100 million as compensation.

Meanwhile, Asyraf said tonight that all Umno supreme council members will coordinate the party’s machinery at all polling districts for the Nenggiri by-election in Kelantan, beginning from nomination day on Aug 3.

On July 18, Umno announced the party’s Kelantan Youth chief Mohd Azmawi Fikri Abdul Ghani as its candidate for the state assembly seat, while PN through Bersatu announced former Gua Musang PAS deputy youth chief Mohd Rizwadi Ismail as its candidate.

Asyraf also reaffirmed Umno’s support for the Palestinian cause, in solidarity with Hamas, Fatah, and all Palestinians under siege by Israel’s Zionist regime.

Earlier today, it was reported that Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was killed in his residence in Tehran, Iran.
