Kesedar ready to take over water management if K'tan can't handle it

The Kelantan Selatan Development Authority (Kesedar) is prepared to take over water supply management in the state if Air Kelantan Sdn Bhd fails to resolve ongoing problems.

Kesedar chairperson Zawawi Othman said the state’s water issue demonstrates the Kelantan government’s failure to manage its subsidiary company in providing a basic necessity to the people.

Zawawi (above, right) said the federal government through Kesedar has “bailed out” Air Kelantan by providing water tanks at times when the southern part of the state is facing water issues.

“However, there are times when this tank water also has problems but don’t blame the federal government because this is not their responsibility, they are only helping.

“And if they (the state government) cannot do it, they can surrender, and we at Kesedar are willing to become the water management company.

“If they don’t want to give the entire south of Kelantan, give us Gua Musang, Insya Allah we will do our best,” he said at a press conference in Gua Musang, this afternoon.

Water problems that have persisted for decades are synonymous with Kelantan.

Tank water is often used to address water supply disruptions, especially for those in rural areas, but it can be contaminated by uncontrolled logging.

Last March, Kelantan folk were asked to be patient as the state’s water issues will be completely resolved by 2027.

Kelantan exco for Works, Infrastructure, Water, and Rural Development, Izani Husin, said this was because all upgraded and newly constructed plants would be completed by that year.

“So, in 2028, Kelantan will have a surplus of water supply,” said Izani.
