Bangladeshis in M'sia hail PM Hasina's exit, voice hope

Bangladeshis in Malaysia are thankful for the resignation of their former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and hopeful for the future.

In an interview with KiniTV, social activist Mohammad Jasimmuddin said his first reaction to the news that Hasina fled the country was “Alhamdulillah”.

“We (Bangladeshis) were very happy.

“About 95 percent of the people in the country came out into the streets with their children, mothers, and families to celebrate,” Jasimmuddin (above) said.

On Aug 5, Hasina resigned after weeks of protests, which were initially held against a government job quota system but later turned into a mass movement against the Awami League party’s rule.

She left the capital Dhaka for India on a military helicopter, according to reports from Bangladeshi media.

On Aug 7, Bangladesh’s sole Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus began serving as the country’s interim leader.

In the KiniTV report, a migrant worker only known as Farid expressed his worry over the country’s transition.

“We hope for developments that ensure the people’s human rights, dignity, and opinions are respected and that there is continuous improvement for the future,” he said.

Another migrant worker, only named as Shafiq, said the Bangladeshi population must support Yunus considering the political situation.

“He (Yunus) needs to handle this smartly,” he said.

Similarly, Hasan Mehedi, a Bangladeshi student in Malaysia, said his people deserve peace.

“We deserve a good economy so that we can rely on our own country and not depend on other countries,” he added.
