Chow unsure about defending state party chief post

With less than a week left before nominations close for the Penang DAP party polls, state chairperson Chow Kon Yeow said he was unsure about pursuing a third term.

Speaking to reporters in Bayan Lepas, Chow, who is also Penang chief minister, highlighted that a candidate needs the backing of at least two branches to qualify.

He added that once nominations close on Aug 24, the party headquarters will notify those who are eligible.

"The candidates can either accept or reject the candidacy. So, I will have to wait until then to know if I received the needed support to contest," New Straits Times reported him as saying.

The Penang DAP election has been set for Sept 22.

In November 2018, the Penang state government amended the state constitution to limit the chief minister's tenure to two terms.

Speculation about Chow not defending his post has been rife, with rumours suggesting that Penang DAP secretary Lim Hui Ying might run for the chairperson position.

While Hui Ying serves as Tanjong MP, she does not hold any state assembly seat.

However, her brother, the DAP national chairperson Lim Guan Eng, serves as Bagan MP and Air Putih assemblyperson.

Guan Eng, a former Penang chief minister, was succeeded by Chow after the 14th general election.

Chow and Guan Eng had a difficult relationship in recent years and last year, the latter dismissed the chief minister’s allegation that there was a movement to topple him.
