A man was today ordered to pay his former girlfriend a total of RM87,000 for, among others, a breach of contract after he called off their marriage.

The Ipoh High Court ruled that R Punnosamy, 41, had to pay S Nagamah RM50,000 in compensation for breaching his promise to marry her and RM20,000 for causing mental anguish and loss of reputation.

Punnosamy also had to pay her RM2,000 compensation for slapping her and other costs estimated at RM15,000, Bernama news agency reported.

Nagamah, the 38-year-old wronged woman, was still unmarried and suffering from the shame of the events, her lawyer S uthuveeran told reporters.

Punnosamy's counsel said his client would appeal the decision.
