PKR MP proposes 3 ways for PM to cement legitimacy

PKR MP Hassan Abdul Karim has proposed three ways for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to prove the legitimacy of his administration, once and for all.

He said this after Perikatan Nasional chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin brought up the statutory declarations (SD) issue once again despite Anwar having proven his legitimacy in the Dewan Rakyat two years ago.

Hassan (above) listed three methods that could be used in the Dewan Rakyat sitting beginning Oct 14 - for the government to table a motion of confidence for Anwar; the opposition to table a motion of no confidence; or to vote against Budget 2025.

"If Budget 2025 is passed, then Anwar's legitimacy as prime minister is confirmed.

"On the other hand, if the budget is not passed by the Dewan Rakyat, that means there has been a vote of no confidence against Anwar.

"If Budget 2025 is rejected, that would mean Anwar and his entire cabinet must resign under Article 43(4) of the Federal Constitution, or Anwar must seek an audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to advise for parliament to be dissolved and make way for a general election," he said in a statement.

Muhyiddin, while campaigning in the Nenggiri by-election, claimed that he had 115 SDs after GE15, stating that the number was sufficient for him to become prime minister.

The Pagoh MP also questioned why he was not invited by the previous Agong to be appointed as prime minister.

On that note, Hassan said the issue became more heated when Anwar, after returning from India, said the 115 MPs who allegedly supported Muhyiddin were questioned by the Malay rulers and the attorney-general.

"Anwar has inadvertently dragged the rulers’ name and attorney-general into a dispute over the number of MPs (who allegedly supported Muhyiddin)," the Pasir Gudang MP stated.

He pointed out that both the Conference of Rulers and attorney-general are not parties involved in proving the legitimacy of a prime minister - a process that instead lies under the powers and discretion of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, based on the support of parliamentarians.

“And we cannot easily dismiss Muhyiddin’s claims as the latter took a huge political risk, at the expense of his personal freedom (to make the claim), until he is now being investigated under the draconian Sedition Act 1948,” he said.
