Second Jalan Masjid India sinkhole appears 50m from first one

Another sinkhole has been reported on Jalan Masjid India in Kuala Lumpur, about 50m from where the ground suddenly collapsed on Friday, swallowing a woman pedestrian.

The latest incident is said to have occurred at around 2.30am today, believed due to the heavy rain and storm last night.

Checks at the location show that the security team has cordoned off the sinkhole area to prevent untoward incidents.

In last Friday’s incident, a woman tourist, Vijayaletchumy, 48, from Kuppam, Andhra Pradesh, India, fell into an 8m-deep hole and disappeared.

The search and rescue operation is still ongoing.

Authorities to inspect sewage pipe

Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) and Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) have been asked to inspect the sewage pipe at the second sinkhole.

Mayor Maimunah Mohd Sharif said the sinkhole area had been cordoned off using safety tape and a water barrier as a safety measure.

“We will continue working closely with IWK and other agencies to ensure that continuous and comprehensive follow-up actions are taken to prevent similar incidents from occurring.

“The safety and well-being of city dwellers are our priority. DBKL will continue to monitor this situation and take appropriate measures to ensure public safety,” she said in a statement.

Dang Wangi police chief Suliezmy Affendy Sulaiman was also reported as saying that discussions are underway to extend the public road closure, with further updates to be provided later.
