Deputy National Unity Minister K Saraswathy has warned against fanning the flames of sensitive issues after a Facebook post comparing Hinduism and Islam went viral.

In a statement, she cautioned against provoking religious sensitivities, as this could shatter the nation’s harmony and cause needless tension.

“I take issues that threaten the harmony and unity of our society very seriously.

“We must understand, respect, and accept each other’s beliefs as part of our efforts to maintain national unity,” she said.

Saraswathy’s comments came in response to the Facebook post featuring a comic strip where a mother teaches her child, Hud, about the differences between Hinduism and Islam.

The mother cautioned against equating statues in Hindu temples to gods, explaining that Hindus are called infidels because they do not worship Allah.

The post asserted that while Allah is the only God, Hindus worship statues that cannot help them, which is why they are considered infidels for worshipping creations rather than the Creator.

The post, published on Monday, prompted Malaysia Hindu Sangam (MHS) president T Ganesan to call it offensive to Hindus and urge Saraswathy to address the issue.

Commenting further, Saraswathy emphasised the importance of unity, urging Malaysians to celebrate the country’s diversity rather than making statements that could jeopardise national unity.

“The history of our country has proven that the peace and progress we enjoy today are the result of a spirit of unity, where various races and religions have come together for the sake of collective peace and progress.

“With unity and mutual respect, we can ensure that Malaysia remains a peaceful and harmonious place for everyone,” she added.
