Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is being ridiculed by his grandchildren for supporting the Manchester United football team, which has failed to shine in the Premier League.

He said that while his grandchildren have chosen to back Arsenal and Liverpool, he would remain loyal to the Red Devils.

“I have been a Man U supporter since back then. So my grandchildren tell me, ‘Papa tok, you are ancient, the history (the era of Manchester United) is gone.

“I said, ‘No. I cannot change (support to another team)’,” he told the Finance Ministry staff gathering in Putrajaya today.

Manchester United, which lost to Liverpool 0-3 on Sunday, is in 14th place on the Premier League table.

Anwar also lamented that whenever his grandchildren came over, they would mock him about his club losing again.

“I am tired of listening to this,” he quipped.

The prime minister shared this when speaking about the interest in sports, especially football, which spans across generations.

Anwar’s predecessor, Najib Abdul Razak, who is serving a six-year prison term, is also a Manchester United fan.

In 2015, during the 1MDB scandal, the former premier courted online flak when he expressed optimism for the club’s performance ahead of the new season and its match against Tottenham Hotspur.

Some Manchester United fans were not pleased, claiming that Najib was “bad luck” for the club.

“Why does Manchester United have a fan like Najib? No wonder it did not do well. Why doesn't Najib support Arsenal instead?" said one netizen.

Another suggested that the former premier buy Manchester United with his “billions” in reference to the issue of the “RM2.6 billion” deposited into his bank account.

Two years later, Najib addressed the allegation on social media that he jinxed the club, claiming that his critics were proven wrong after Manchester United defeated Arsenal.

"(They) won right? There are those who always say when I tweet, Manchester United would lose. I read them, don't think I don't," he had said in a social media post.
