'Zero principles', human rights lawyer sees red over boycott call of Hot FM

Some netizens’ call for a boycott of a Hot FM Radio show does not sit well with human rights lawyer Eric Paulsen.

Describing them as having zero principles, he compared the reaction to satirical posters of disgraced former premier Najib Abdul Razak to Khairy Jamaluddin’s alleged mockery of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim during the Malay language station show.

“Then, Najib’s clown poster - satire, freedom of speech, democratic rights, dictator, iron claws, etc.

"Now, KJ/DJ is being sarcastic, making fun of Anwar - not allowed.

"Zero principles,” Paulsen said on X.

The call for boycott came after a clip was posted on TikTok, showing Khairy quipping that if he won Berita Harian’s upcoming Anugerah Bintang Popular award, he would treat everyone to a meal.

“Saudara-saudara, hari ini saya menang, besok kita makan ramai-ramai (ladies and gentleman, if I win today, tomorrow, we will have a feast tomorrow),” the former minister said amid laughter.

After a brief exchange with the hosts, Khairy stated “saya ulang… (I repeat)” before bursting into chuckles again.

Although he did not mention the prime minister, the choice of words, tone and the manner in which it was delivered were compared to Anwar’s often repeated promise in the past such as - “Hari ini saya menang, esok harga minyak turun (If I win today, petrol prices will be reduced tomorrow).”

Some netizens were displeased, stating that lampooning the prime minister was improper, while others defended it as nothing more than a joke.
