PAS spiritual leader: 'We don't interfere with them eating pork'

PAS spiritual leader Hashim Jasin has described the stance of DAP leaders on the halal certification issue as being discordant.

Without directly naming Seputeh MP Teresa Kok, who is entangled in controversy after her remarks on the issue, Hashim questioned why Muslim affairs are being interfered in.

“Firstly, our country’s laws have never prohibited non-Muslims from eating pork.

“They can eat it, but maybe there are certain regulations like not eating it in public.

“Drinking alcohol is allowed. So why interfere in this matter where Muslims enforce their rules?

“Suddenly there’s a suggestion not to require halal certification. I feel this overly touches on the sensitivities of Muslims,” he said.

He was speaking to the media after officiating the As-Sabiqun 4.0 Conference in conjunction with PAS’ 70th muktamar in Temerloh, Pahang, today.

Kok was criticised for warning that the proposal - to mandate halal certification for eateries that do not serve pork and alcohol - might burden businesses, was against the spirit of diversity, and could make Malaysia an object of ridicule abroad.

She later clarified that she was not against the certification but was voicing the problems that people of various races faced.

‘That’s only with 40 seats’

Hashim said this kind of behaviour was what led the Islamist party to sever ties with DAP in the past.

“And now, day by day, they are showing more of it.

“That’s just with 40 seats. Imagine what would happen if they (DAP) won 120 seats,” he added.

However, he said PAS’ rejection of DAP does not mean they cannot interact with the party’s followers.

“That’s a different matter,” he added.
