PAS will decide on opening membership to non-Muslims tomorrow

PAS will decide on a proposal to open its membership to non-Muslims tomorrow, said its spiritual leader Hashim Jasin.

According to him, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang would also touch on this issue in his speech when officiating the muktamar tomorrow morning before the delegates debate on it.

“PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan will table it and the president’s speech will also touch on it,” he told reporters.

Previously, party deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said the party would make several amendments to its constitution but did not reveal details.

“Non-Muslims have asked to be members while PAS only accepts Muslims as members. That is why we have the PAS Non-Muslim Supporters Congress (DHPP).

“We have to wait for the decision of the debate tomorrow,” Hashim (above) said, adding that whatever decision is made at the muktamar is final.

The DHPP, which is spearheaded by N Balasubramaniam, was known as the PAS Supporters Club before being upgraded to a congress in 2010.

Get closer to non-Muslims

On Wednesday, Tuan Ibrahim ordered delegates at the Youth muktamar to get closer to non-Muslim voters and win back their trust.

He said non-Muslims shunned PAS due to lies spread by its political opponents and thus, it was time to show them the reality of life under the Islamist party’s leadership.

During last year’s muktamar, Hadi issued a similar message.

"We have successfully gained the support of Malay-Muslim voters in GE15, so the important and challenging task ahead is to attract non-Muslim and non-Malay voters in GE16 (16th general election).

"This matter is crucial and should be discussed and implemented with hard work, organisation and wisdom," he said.
