PAS still trying to attract Umno leaders' support, but not Zahid

PAS MUKTAMAR | PAS is insistent that the party continues its efforts to attract the support of Umno leaders in their efforts to revive Muafakat Nasional.

Its president Abdul Hadi Awang admitted that his party was still open to accepting Umno.

However, it involves only some Umno leaders and not those allied to Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

"Yes, yes, yes (we are open to accepting Umno).

"(We) want to attract bumiputera Malay leaders, and non-Muslims who are not extreme," he told a press conference after launching the 70th PAS muktamar in Kerdau, Temerloh, today.

The Marang MP also explained the original discussion about Muafakat which successfully took over Putrajaya during the Sheraton Move that toppled the Pakatan Harapan administration in February 2020.

The effort, he said, showed success and made an impact even though the government formed by Perikatan Nasional only lasted 33 months.

"What we originally discussed was the unification of Malay Muslims and bumiputera involving Umno leaders, but not (team) Zahid. He was not involved. We agreed to gather bumiputera Malay Muslim MPs to take over the government together with Bersatu and we succeeded.

"However, because our position was not strong, that's what happened.

"But when there is success, there is an effect. The effect is that some Umno leaders are with us, only a few are with them," claimed Hadi.

However, he did not explain which Umno leaders are with PN and could be referring to the allegations that 10 Umno representatives signed the statutory declaration supporting Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin in the premiership battle that followed the 15th general election in November 2022.

It should be noted that until today, no Umno MP has declared that he does not support Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim-led coalition government.
