PKR's new sec-gen looks to strengthen party structure, discipline

Newly appointed PKR secretary-general Fuziah Salleh has outlined her vision to strengthen the party by clearly defining roles, emphasising that discipline and a strong foundation are essential as the party matures.

“As a 25-year-old party, the groundwork laid by our grassroots must reflect discipline,” she said, acknowledging the contributions of activists from diverse backgrounds who have enriched the party over the years.

She highlighted the importance of maintaining the party’s core values, noting that while PKR’s journey began on the streets, the true essence of reform is an ongoing process that requires commitment from every member.

“Change starts from within each member. We must remain true to our party identity and never be apologetic for what we stand for,” she added.

Fuziah stressed the need for PKR’s diverse culture to stand out, emphasising that diversity is fundamental to its identity as a reformist party for all Malaysians.

By embracing this, she believes every member can contribute to the party more effectively.

“Our party culture must be distinctive, and everyone should be able to serve to their best capacity, reflecting our values as a diverse, reformist party,” she said.

On Sept 15, Fuziah was appointed as the PKR secretary-general, replacing Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

PKR vice-president Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad announced that Saifuddin had let go of the position and will focus his efforts as Pakatan Harapan secretary-general instead.

The move was part of a leadership reshuffle decided by the party’s central leadership committee.

Fuziah’s CV

Apart from her new role, Fuziah also serves as a senator and deputy minister of domestic trade and cost of living.

She previously served as the Kuantan MP for three terms, as well as deputy minister (religious affairs) in the Prime Minister’s Department during the Pakatan Harapan government from 2018 to 2020.

Earlier this month, she completed her PhD in Business Administration at the Asia e University, with a thesis titled “Consumer Acceptance of the Government-Initiated Mobile Rahmah Sales Programme in Malaysia”.

She trained as a counsellor at the University of Reading before obtaining her Master of Business Administration from the University of Wales.

She entered politics in 1999 and worked as a counsellor and freelance training consultant before becoming an MP following the 2008 general election.

In addition, she co-founded Raudhatus Sakinah in 1997, which serves as a shelter for teenage girls who became pregnant out of wedlock.
