No more discussions with opposition on 'rejected' MOU - DPM

Deputy Prime Minister Fadillah Yusof said today that the government has no plans to further discuss the draft agreement on constituency allocations for opposition MPs.

This was after the proposed terms were rejected by top Perikatan Nasional leaders, including Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin and PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man.

According to Harian Metro, Fadillah said the government will respect the opposition’s rejection of the draft agreement.

“That is the position, and regardless, there is no need for further comments [...] We (the government) have given (the draft MOU) and they (the opposition) have rejected.

“So, what more can we do?,” he reportedly said in Johor Bahru today.

Likening the government’s offer to seeking a hand in marriage, Fadillah quipped it would be “embarrassing” to try again once they have been turned down.

However, the energy transition and water transformation minister said despite the spurned offer, the government will not sideline any parties from federal allocations.

“Federal allocations will continue (to the constituency), except that the MP’s role will only be to propose a project and necessary assistance.

“Not one place will be left out. All will benefit whether with an MOU or otherwise. The government will not alienate any parties,” he stressed.

On Thursday (Sept 19), Fadillah, in response to PN secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin, said the opposition can submit new proposals or feedback, to further discuss the draft MOU.

However, the offer for further discussion was widely panned by top PN leaders who claimed the government was being insincere.
