Ipoh man fumes after racist pizza order in Kuching used his number

A receipt for a pizza order went viral when the purported buyer left remarks insulting Islam on it, prompting angry Muslims to flood the phone number on the receipt with angry calls and messages.

However, the man who owns the phone number on the receipt claimed he was an innocent victim who had been framed.

The receipt, sighted by Malaysiakini, showed a person purportedly with the surname “Teoh” placed an order with a pizza chain's outlet in Kuching, Sarawak on Sept 19 (Thursday).

When checked, the delivery address is an Islamic information centre.

However, the phone number’s actual owner’s surname is Lim, and he lives in Ipoh, Perak.

When contacted, Lim - who only wished to be identified by his surname - said he had been inundated with calls and messages from unknown numbers.

“I’m exhausted from receiving these WhatsApp calls and messages.

“I’ve lodged a police report, and I hope they swiftly investigate and hold those responsible accountable, as this is a deeply sensitive issue,” he told Malaysiakini.

Lim had also posted a denial on his Facebook page, expressing anger that his phone number was used to place an order with such a racist message on it.

In the same post, he shared a copy of the police report he had filed at the Sungai Senam police station in Ipoh, Perak, on Sept 19.

Following advice from the authorities, Lim also lodged a complaint with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission.

When contacted, Ipoh district police chief Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad confirmed the investigation.

“We are still investigating the matter. So far, there are no updates,” he briefly stated.

Similar case

There was a similar case two weeks ago where a screenshot of a fast food purchase receipt believed to be in Taman Inderawasih, Penang went viral on social media for containing words insulting Islam.

The police are investigating the case under Section 298 of the Penal Code and Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955.

According to the Seberang Perai Tengah district police chief Helmi Aris, police have conducted a preliminary investigation into the information, which was attributed to an individual who allegedly made the fast food order.

The individual, however, denied making the order and believed that others had misused his details and address.
