Malaysian industrial output rose 2.1 percent year-on-year in July due mainly to increases in electricity, mining and manufcturing sectors, data showed today.

The output in July, as measured by the industrial production index (IPI), was up 1.6 percent from June, the statistics department said.

On an annual basis, the electricity sector grew by 3.7 percent, the mining sector expanded 3.3 percent while manufacturing increased 1.7 percent.

"The increase in the manufacturing sector was driven by the positive growth registered by the refined petroleum products and non-metalic mineral products groups," it said in a statement.

Month-on-month, the electricity sector expanded by 4.9 percent, the mining sector grew 3.0 percent and the manufacturing added 1.0 percent.

For the first seven months of the year, the IPI rose 1.4 percent from a year earlier.
