Daim warded in Assunta Hospital

Former finance minister Daim Zainuddin was warded at Assunta Hospital yesterday.

The tycoon’s counsel Gurdial Singh Nijar informed the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court this morning about the accused being unable to be present at today’s proceedings.

However, the defence lawyer did not mention the reason for the 86-year-old’s admission into the hospital.

Today was set for proceedings related to the prosecution’s application for Daim (above) to undergo a mental evaluation and determine whether he is fit to stand trial for his asset declaration case.

Gurdial, who was brought on board the defence team recently, informed trial judge Azura Alwi that Daim’s lawyers need more time to prepare submissions to object against the prosecutors' mental evaluation bid.

Azura then set Nov 20 to hear the defence team’s rebuttal against the mental evaluation application.

The trial judge, however, stressed that Daim must attend court proceedings on that date.

Daim and Na’imah’s charges

On Jan 29, Daim claimed trial for failing to abide by an MACC notice to disclose assets which included 38 firms, 25 pieces of land and property, seven luxury vehicles, and two investment fund accounts.

His wife Na’imah Abdul Khalid, 66, also faced a similar charge of failing to disclose assets involving multiple lands, properties, and luxury vehicles.

Accused of committing the offence between Dec 13 and 14 last year, the couple may be jailed for up to five years and fined up to RM100,000.

Daim was released on RM280,000 bail, while Na’imah is out on RM250,000 bail.

The asset disclosure charges were framed under Section 36(2) of the MACC Act 2009.
