Govt backbenchers urge Putrajaya to set long-term vision

PARLIAMENT | The government backbenchers club (BBC) today urged Putrajaya to come up with a long-term economic vision like Wawasan 2020 and Transformasi Nasional 2050.

Its chairperson Mohd Shahar Abdullah (BN-Paya Besar) said such a plan is necessary to help guide the nation towards a set target.

“Yes, we already have several frameworks like Ekonomi Madani, the Nimp (New Industrial Master Plan 2030), and NETR (National Energy Transition Roadmap), among others.

“But what we don’t have is a vision that looks 30 years ahead. I really wish that all the Malaysia plans we have today can be coordinated based on a long term vision.

“Like what was said before about the Wawasan Kemakmuran Bersama, I have no problem with that. But it is important for us to have a continuity to the Wawasan 2020,” he said in his debate speech at the Dewan Rakyat.

Shahar was debating the Supply Bill in his capacity as the BBC chair.  

He said the previous government under Najib Abdul Razak’s leadership also had its Transformasi Nasional 2050 vision, something that he hinted the current government can learn from.

“It is fine if you do not want to continue using the same name, but we should at least have a plan for 30 years ahead.

“So that we can tell the people where our goal post is, where we are heading,” Shahar said.
