Electrocuted: Late student's family wants court hearing, not mediation

The family of S Vinosiny wants a full court hearing of their civil suit against Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM).

Seeking RM3.05 million in damages, the suit was filed over alleged negligence following the student’s death by electrocution in her hostel room on the university’s campus in Kedah.

The family’s lawyer, M Manoharan, said they were not keen on the court-proposed mediation between them and UUM set for March 23, 2025.

“I have instructions the family wants a full court hearing so that justice is achieved,” he said.

Yesterday, it was reported that the matter was to be heard by a mediator next March and, if a settlement was not reached, a full hearing would be held in November.

Vinosiny, who was 20, was in the fourth semester of her accounting and information system studies, and had returned to campus a week before the tragedy.

Last year, the Alor Setar Coroner’s Court ruled that the student died of electrocution.

The deceased’s father, R Sivakumar, filed the civil action against UUM in February this year.
