Stained reputation: IGP warns cops escorting VVIPs not to break the law

Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain has issued a reminder to his personnel tasked with escorting VVIPs to not act beyond the law, following recent two indictments involving police officers.

According to the New Straits Times, Razarudin emphasised that there are no double standards and assured the public that police personnel would not receive preferential treatment.

“If our police personnel break any laws, we will take action immediately,” he said.

He also said there is proof that police officers were not above the law as there were multiple arrests in the past involving police personnel and they were hauled to court.

Last Monday, a police officer who escorted Johor Regent Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim pleaded guilty to assaulting disabled e-hailing driver Ong Ing Keong.

Muhammad Taufik Ismail was slapped with a RM1,000 fine for causing hurt to the 47-year-old deaf driver.

Yesterday, police officer Mohd Fouzi Md Nur, the nephew to the Pahang sultan Tengku Eddie Akasya, and three others were accused of assaulting road construction worker Alias Awang.

Citing the above two cases, Razarudin said such actions had tarnished the reputation of the entire police force.

“Our men and women in the force must act responsibly and never abuse the authority that they have been entrusted with.

“I have said this before, and will say it again... the time for warnings has passed.

“If you break the law, you will face the consequences.”
