Government spokesperson Fahmi Fadzil has urged a whistleblower who exposed a bribery case involving assemblypersons to lodge a report with the MACC.
In a text message to Malaysiakini, Fahmi (above) said the individual will be protected under the Whistleblower Protection Act 2010.
“The Act clearly provides protections for whistleblowers, and this protection is subject to the law.
“This (protection) includes the identity of the whistleblower and the information given will be kept secret as well,” the minister said.
Section 7(1) of the Act states that the identity of a whistleblower and the information provided must be kept confidential and cannot be revealed to any parties including during a court trial.
Fahmi was responding to a report by Malaysiakini earlier today about eight video recordings of assemblypersons purportedly discussing receiving hundreds of thousands in bribes.
A source told Malaysiakini that the whistleblower is seeking protection under the Whistleblower Protection Act 2010 before proceeding further.
Once the whistleblower has been granted protection, a report will be lodged with the MACC and the recordings will be handed over to facilitate investigations, the source said.

It is understood that the whistleblower has appointed lawyer Izwan Azmi from Izwan Mazniza Kamil and Associates to pursue the matter.
Malaysiakini, which sighted the eight videos, is withholding the identities of the politicians until it obtains copies of the recordings and comments from those implicated.
Earlier, PSM deputy chairperson S Arutchelvan said the MACC and government must protect the whistleblower, and that restraining orders must be issued against the relevant assemblypersons or their agents to prevent interference in the matter.
