'MACC, govt must protect whistleblower in reps' bribery case'

MACC and the government must immediately provide protection to the whistleblower in the bribery case involving assemblypersons.

In a statement to Malaysiakini, PSM deputy chairperson S Arutchelvan said restraining orders must be issued against the relevant assemblypersons or their agents in order to prevent interference in the matter.

“This will be a test on the government on how far it will go to fight corruption,” Arutchelvan said.

Silence on corruption is not an option, he added.

He was responding to a report by Malaysiakini earlier today about eight video recordings of assemblypersons purportedly discussing receiving hundreds of thousands in bribes.

A source told Malaysiakini that the whistleblower is seeking protection under the Whistleblower Protection Act 2010 before proceeding further.

The act, which aims to promote the disclosure of information regarding corruption or other misconduct, provides protection to whistleblowers including from civil action, and criminal or disciplinary consequences.

Once the whistleblower has been granted protection, a report would be lodged with the MACC and the recordings will be handed over to facilitate investigations, the source said.

It is understood that the whistleblower has appointed lawyer Izwan Azmi from Izwan Mazniza Kamil and Associates to pursue the matter.

Malaysiakini, which sighted the eight videos, is withholding the identities of the politicians until it obtains copies of the recordings and comments from those implicated.
