Higher royalties proof govt did not sideline opposition states, says PM

Different political stances do not mean the government sidelines opposition-controlled states, said Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

In fact, he said, states controlled by the opposition such as Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah, and Perlis have received higher royalties this year compared to last year.

"I can give you the figures for Perlis, Kelantan, and Terengganu. They are much higher compared to last year, and higher than the total amount we take.

"But sometimes, these facts don't reach the people, because that's politics.

"When it comes to poverty, education, basic facilities, and damage, for example, the Kenyir Lake embankment collapse in Terengganu, we considered it, we expedited the allocation of more than RM2 million, and we approved it immediately," he said, commenting on the relationship between the federal government and the states.

Anwar commented on this during a town hall session at the launch of the “Two Years of Madani Government” programme and the 2024 Public Service Reform National Convention at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) today.

Anwar said negotiations and discussions with all menteris besar including those from opposition states have been going well, adding that he will set aside political differences.

He said cabinet members also hold discussions with state governments and will meet with all opposition menteris besar.

"For me, this is about work, and our cooperation with state governments is clear. It makes things easier if they have a positive attitude," he said.
