Malaysians are advised against all travel to Burma but the government said it was not going to evacuate its citizens from the strife-torn nation at the moment.

Malaysia is a major investor in resource-rich Burma, where at least 13 people including a Japanese journalist were killed when troops opened fire on protesters last week.

"I advise Malaysians to avoid going to Burma until the situation returns to normal," the official Bernama news agency quoted Najib Razak, deputy prime minister, as saying.

Don't join demos

"So far, our embassy has not advised us to evacuate Malaysians from Burma. If there are Malaysians in Burma, my advice to them is to stay away from the country's internal problems. Don't join in the demonstrations," he said.

National carrier Malaysia Airlines flies five times a week to Rangoon and an official said on Saturday it was flying as usual.

Southeast Asian nations demanded Thursday that Burma's military junta immediately stop using violence against pro-democracy protestors and warned that the bloody crisis was having "a serious impact on the reputation and credibility of Asean."
