No changes to alcohol sale regulations, Nga assures

Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming has assured the public that there will be no changes to the existing rules regarding the sale of alcohol.

Speaking to the media in Ipoh today, Nga confirmed that the regulations will remain unchanged, dismissing concerns over the matter.

“If you are not allowed to drink, simply don’t buy it, and no one will stop you.

“But, you cannot stop others from buying,” he said, as quoted by New Straits Times.

His remarks came after reports that Ipoh mayor Rumaizi Baharin had suggested that the Ipoh City Council will be considering expanding the restriction on alcoholic beverage sales to areas with a majority Muslim population.

The policy has only been enforced in Manjoi so far.

Respect, mutual understanding

Nga explained that the Madani aspirations are rooted in respect and compassion.

“In addition to sustainability, prosperity, innovation, and competitiveness, these pillars emphasise mutual understanding and consideration.

“For instance, if a convenience store sells alcohol, those who are prohibited from drinking it should simply refrain from buying it.

“That’s all. However, we cannot stop others who are allowed to drink, as that is their right. This is the essence of respect and mutual understanding,” he added.

In response to Rumaizi’s proposal, Sandrea Ng, the state’s Housing and Local Government executive councillor clarified that no discussions had taken place about extending the restriction.

She pointed out that clear and comprehensive regulations governing the sale and distribution of alcoholic beverages already exist.
