Perikatan Nasional has taken the Chinese New Year season to better understand the ethnic Chinese community.

Coalition deputy chief Hamzah Zainudin held a lunch with the chief and senior editors of several Chinese-language news outlets to listen to their views.

"Apart from exchanging views on the stance, direction and aspirations of PN and Bersatu, I listened carefully to the matters they expressed openly because they reflected the wishes and expressions of feelings of a large number of Chinese people regarding current issues in the country, including economic, political and social aspects," Hamzah said on Facebook.

The former minister said that among those present at the lunch were Bersatu vice-president Ronald Kiandee, Bersatu executive council members Tan Lek Khang and Goh Gaik Meng.

It should be noted that it is a common practice for ministers and politicians to invite Chinese media members for dinner to celebrate Chinese New Year.

PN is a right-wing coalition that is made up of the Malay ethnonationalist party Bersatu, as well as PAS.

Despite the inclusion of Gerakan, which is a multiracial party and Indian-based Malaysian Indian People's Party, PN is struggling to capture votes from non-Malays.
