A single mother today pleaded not guilty at the Kangar Sessions Court in Perlis to a charge of abusing her 11-year-old daughter.
According to news reports, Ong Ying Jy, 33, entered her plea when the charge was read before judge Sharifah Norazlita Syed Salim Idid.
She is accused of physically injuring her biological daughter in a room of a house in Taman Kangar at approximately 6am on April 6.
Under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 (Amendment 2006), the accused faces up to 20 years’ imprisonment, a fine not exceeding RM50,000, or both.
Previously, it was reported that Ong was arrested on April 8 in Changlun, Kedah while visiting her friend.
Kangar police chief Yusharifuddin Mohd Yusop said the headmaster at the victim’s school had lodged a police report after discovering the abuse.
“The alleged abuse came to the headmaster’s attention after noticing the victim repeatedly arriving late to school.
“A medical report from Tuanku Fauziah Hospital in Kangar showed the victim had sustained injuries to her back, neck, legs and arms from being bitten and stabbed with a pair of scissors, believed to be the type used for cutting fish,” he was quoted as saying.
During proceedings this morning, deputy public prosecutor Nabilah Ahmad Poad handled the prosecution, while the accused was not represented.
Nabilah recommended that the court set bail at RM15,000 and requested that the accused be prohibited from contacting the victim. She also urged the court to place the child under the care of the appropriate authorities.
The accused requested a lower bail amount, explaining that she needed to work to support her daughter.
Following the alleged abuse, the child is no longer residing with the accused. The father has since taken custody and is now caring for her in Kampung Megat Dewa, Kedah.
