Umno Veterans Club secretary-general Mustapha Yaakub has revealed the underlying motive behind PAS’ persistent focus on Umno’s alliance with DAP.

However, his answer casts DAP in a less-than-flattering light and undermines its once defiant stance.

“PAS tried to tame the wild horse that is DAP during their time together as ‘PasDap’ in the same stable. But PAS failed to ride DAP because they liked to ‘enter from the back’, which led to them being kicked by the wild horse. Eventually, PAS withdrew and left the stable.

“Today, that once wild horse, now nearly tame, is with Umno and is becoming even more docile within the BN-Pakatan Harapan stable,” he was quoted as stating by Umno Online.

Therefore, Mustapha argued that PAS’ “UmDAP” narrative reflects their regret and jealousy over the success of the two coalitions in forming the federal government.

He pointed out that PAS issued various fatwas when “married” to DAP, including giving former secretary-general Lim Guan Eng the title of Caliph Umar Abdul Aziz and permitting its supporters to vote for DAP.

“PAS, which gave Lim the title of Khalifah Umar Abdul Aziz. PAS, which allowed its supporters to vote for DAP. PAS, which raised the DAP flag for the first time in the Galas by-election. PAS, which embraced and kissed DAP.

“Umno never did any of that. We are merely friends within the same stable. Umno is not bound to DAP. Umno is not DAP’s lackey. Umno is not DAP’s follower. Umno remains Umno. Umno is Islam. Umno is Malay. Umno is the Malay rulers. Umno is the homeland of the Malays.

“Umno can leave the stable if religion, race, the Malay rulers, and this country are not respected and accepted by Harapan,” he added.

Enemies to allies

PAS first worked with DAP during the 10th general election in 1999 under the Barisan Alternatif platform.

After facing failure, the cooperation between PAS and DAP was continued under a new platform, Pakatan Rakyat, from 2008 to 2015.

Since forming an uneasy alliance after decades of political rivalry, both Umno and DAP frequently find themselves in the challenging position of justifying their partnership to their respective supporters.

This unprecedented collaboration was born following a fragmented election result in the 2022 national polls that left no single coalition with a clear majority.

DAP’s secular state agenda and its “Malaysian Malaysia” slogan are often used by PAS to stoke fears among the Malay-Muslim electorate - a tactic Umno itself employed in the past.
