Nurul Izzah, Rafizi file nominations for PKR deputy presidency

PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar has officially submitted her nomination for the party’s deputy president post, the first candidate to do so today.

The Penang PKR chairperson’s nomination ended speculations over her decision, following overwhelming endorsements from various levels of the party.

Her name was recorded in the internal candidates’ list shortly after her father, Anwar Ibrahim, submitted his nomination to retain the party presidency.

Rafizi second to file

On Tuesday, two days before official nominations opened, lobbying for PKR’s number two post gained momentum with Perak PKR information chief Azam Afandi being the first to declare his support for Nurul Izzah to contest against incumbent Rafizi Ramli.

Rafizi became the second candidate to submit his nominations.

The economy minister’s decision also reaffirmed his position in the party after initial resignation rumours were fuelled by his brief time off from the ministry.

Rafizi later clarified he had requested leave from his government duties to focus on internal party matters that followed unhappiness over division-level poll results that saw losses among his supporters.

So far, it remains unclear whether Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, initially tipped to challenge Rafizi, will proceed to nominate himself before the nomination period closes at 11.59pm today.
