PAS welcomes police probe into flag blunder, says sorry no cure

PAS has welcomed a police investigation into a post by its Terengganu chapter that featured an incorrect version of the Jalur Gemilang, asserting that an apology alone is insufficient for such mistakes.

Party secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said the party supported a transparent, fair, and firm probe to ensure that such insensitivity, negligence, or errors are not repeated.

“As citizens, PAS believes that all parties are obliged to show the highest respect and pride towards national symbols at all times and in all situations as a reflection of our national identity and patriotism,” he added in a statement.

Takiyuddin also highlighted that Terengganu PAS made a public apology and immediately corrected the mistake as soon as it was pointed out, and even took action against the personnel involved.

“However, PAS agrees and concedes that an apology alone, without stricter action, should not be normalised as a solution for such mistakes,” he added.

Blunder probed under 3 laws

Yesterday, Terengganu police chief Khairi Khairudin announced that 16 reports have been filed concerning the use of the erroneous Jalur Gemilang on the promotional poster for the upcoming “Himpunan Teguh Memimpin Terengganu (HTMT 1.0) 2025” event.

He added that the matter is currently under investigation under Section 4(1)(b) of the Printing Presses and Publications Act 1984, Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, and Section 3(1)(c) of the Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Act (Amendment) 2017.

The official poster, created by PAS Terengganu to promote the event scheduled from May 29 to 31 in Kemaman, displays the Jalur Gemilang on the left, the PAS logo in the centre, and the Terengganu state flag on the right.

The poster sparked online backlash due to inaccuracies in the depiction of the Jalur Gemilang, which showed a yellow star with only 11 points and 12 red-and-white stripes, instead of the correct 14-pointed star and 14 stripes, which symbolise the 13 states and the federal territories.
