Summary

  • PKR president Anwar Ibrahim believes that the intense internal competition the party is experiencing will end with reconciliation after the polls end.

  • He says those contesting have all contributed and sacrificed for the party.

PKR president Anwar Ibrahim is not worried about the intensity of the party’s current elections, as he believes all its leaders will unite and forgive each other once the election is over.

He stressed that all candidates contesting in this election are individuals who have contributed to PKR’s struggle.

“Some of the contests are so intense it’s as if mountains could crumble, but once it’s over, we should reunite and forgive one another.

“Because those who are competing are also people who have made contributions, so don’t take an adversarial stance… There may be some differences in opinion, but there should also be compassion and care.

“Many people are quite troubled, but I’m not too worried, because I say this contest for deputy president, vice-presidents, youth, and women’s wings involves old friends, loyal comrades, most of whom are original fighters of the cause,” he said.

Anwar said this while speaking at the launch of the Langkawi PKR division office today.

‘I support both’

The ongoing PKR election will see a fierce showdown for the position of deputy president, with incumbent Rafizi Ramli being challenged by Anwar’s daughter, Nurul Izzah.

Many PKR division leaders nationwide have openly declared their support for Nurul Izzah in the race.

Anwar said if there were two spots for deputy president, he would support both candidates to be co-deputy president, and the same goes for the 11 candidates vying for the four vice-president posts.

Meanwhile, he reminded PKR members not to further escalate tensions amid the polls.

Even with differing opinions, he said, all contestants’ contributions to the party cannot be denied.

“Let us not add to or raise the heat of this election - let’s resolve things amicably, because even if we differ in opinion on certain matters, we cannot deny the tremendous service and contributions made by these individuals.

“Some of them have sacrificed more and worked harder than us,” Anwar added.
