Preacher Ahmad Fauwaz Fadzil, son of a former PAS president, has been appointed as the new mufti for the federal territories as of last Friday (May 23).
The Islamic Development Department (Jakim) announced the appointment on its official Facebook page today.
“Heartiest congratulations. The director-general and all Jakim members extend their highest congratulations to Fauwaz on his appointment as the mufti of the federal territories, effective May 23.
“May Allah ease all matters and grant strength in carrying out this great responsibility for the benefit of the ummah and the nation,” the post read.
Fauwaz is the son of deceased former PAS president Fadzil Noor and the younger brother of Amanah secretary-general Faiz Fadzil.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in Islamic law from Al-Azhar University in Egypt and a master’s degree in the same subject from Universiti Malaya.
He also underwent fatwa training at Dar al-Ifta’ in Egypt and holds a certification in fatwa competency.
He has expertise in the field of aqidah (Islamic creed) and previously served as an expert panelist on aqidah at the Perak Islamic Religious Department.
He is also a member of the Federal Territory Islamic Religious Council board of directors.
Before his appointment as a mufti, Fauwaz was actively involved in Islamic dakwah (preaching) and education. He led a special committee to develop a faith rehabilitation module for children involved with GISB Holdings Sdn Bhd (GISBH).
In the field of Islamic finance, he served as an Islamic legal advisor for several institutions, including Alliance Islamic Bank Berhad and FWD Takaful Berhad. He also conducts training in fiqh (Islamic legal jurisprudence) through his company, FAZ Advisors.
Fauwaz’s appointment as the federal territories’ mufti sees him succeeding Luqman Abdullah, who returned to his academic role as a lecturer at Universiti Malaya after holding the position since 2020.
