Mkini hosts blood donation drive

Malaysiakini hosted a blood donation drive yesterday ahead of the World Blood Donor Day celebration on June 14.
The event was held at the news portal’s Petaling Jaya office in collaboration with the National Blood Centre, and saw Malaysiakini staff as well as workers from surrounding offices roll up their sleeves to help save lives.
“At Malaysiakini, we believe in giving back, not just through journalism, but through action.
“This blood donation drive is a simple yet powerful way to save lives and unite our team, subscribers, and the public around a common cause,” said Malaysiakini’s Sugannia Chandra Shakar, who organised the event.
Participants each took about an hour to undergo medical screening to determine their suitability to donate blood, have about 450ml of the vital fluid drawn from their body, and rest after giving blood.
The donors were also provided with light refreshments to help them recuperate.
The collected blood will undergo further testing to ensure it is free of infectious diseases before being separated into its components or used directly in life-saving interventions at various hospitals in the country.
However, the donated blood and its constituent parts have a limited shelf-life - a short as five days for platelets and as long as three years for plasma.
This has made stocks of blood and blood products volatile, and the National Blood Centre frequently makes calls for more donors to step up when the blood bank runs low.
According to its website, the centre receives requests for about 600 to 700 bags of red blood cells each day from hospitals throughout the Klang Valley.
