Hadi stepping down? Pure speculation, PAS No 2 says

PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man has denied speculation and claims suggesting that president Abdul Hadi Awang is considering stepping down from his position as party president.

Tuan Ibrahim stressed that Hadi, who is a former special envoy to the Middle East, is still needed not only by the party but by the Islamic world at large.

“I feel Tok Guru (Hadi) needs to be retained, and I believe all PAS members agree that Tok Guru should remain.

“In my meetings with several Islamic movements, they have expressed great hope that Tok Guru will continue to provide views, contributions, and thoughts towards uniting the global Islamic community,” he told reporters, after Friday prayers at Medan Ilmu in Kota Bharu, today.

He said this when commenting on claims that Hadi might step down as PAS president.

“What is being claimed as that purportedly said by the president during a settlement meeting - I was present and there with him. Tok Guru didn’t say a single word about it,” Tuan Ibrahim said, referring to the speculations.

“It’s pure speculation. Tok Guru didn’t mention anything, and for us, Tok Guru is still needed. People say he’s frail, but what matters for a leader is his mind, his thinking.

“Tok Guru is needed not just by us, but by the Islamic world. I feel that at present, among Islamic nation leaders, the president ranks number one in terms of political perspective,” Tuan Ibrahim said.

‘No polls campaign culture in PAS’

On PAS’ internal election, Tuan Ibrahim expressed confidence that the party would always “remain calm”.

He said that positions within the party are not matters to be fought over.

“The tradition in PAS is that positions aren’t things to be fought over. In fact, what’s peculiar about PAS is that there’s no campaigning culture.

“Those who campaign usually lose. We leave it to our members and delegates. The delegates have the right to determine candidates, and we open all positions, including president, deputy president, and vice-president, depending on nominations.

“God willing, we’ll always remain calm during elections - there are no problems,” he added.
