The director of management at Bukit Aman Ismail Omar has been named as the new Deputy Inspector-General of Police effective tomorrow.

He would be taking over from Mohd Najib Abdul Aziz, who is retiring from the force.

The appointment was announced by the Internal Security Ministry secretary-general Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof in a statement today.

Abdul Aziz said that Ismail's appointment had been consented by the king based on the advice of the prime minister, after being endorsed by the Police Commission.

Ismail, 54, who was born on May 17 1953 in Kulim, Kedah, holds a law degree from the International Islamic University Malaysia.

Bernama reported that Ismail ( photo ) began his police career as an inspector in 1971 and among the posts he has held are that of investigating officer at the Seremban police headquarters, in 1972, investigating officer at the Ipoh police headquarters (1977) and Assistant Superintendent of Police for disciplinary investigations at Bukit Aman federal police headquarters (1983).

He was the prosecuting officer in Ipoh in 1994 before being promoted to Seberang Perai Tengah OCPD in 1996.

He proceeded to become Acting Commissioner of Police (ACP) Prosecution/Legal Affairs, Bukit Aman CID in 1999; Bukit Aman CID assistant director II in 2004: Bukit Aman Anti-Narcotics Department deputy director II (2005) and Selangor police chief (2006).

He was promoted as the Bukit Aman director of management early this year.
