Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi will soon launch two major development projects worth millions of dollars to fuel growth in Malaysia's Sabah and Sarawak states, an official said Monday.

The rollout of economic master plans for the two resource rich but less developed states on Borneo island is part of a series of ambitious billion dollar plans to spur growth ahead of polls expected early next year.

"There are two separate development plans for Sabah and Sarawak. The prime minister hopes to launch the Sabah plan by the end of the year," an official with the prime minister's department told AFP.

Abdullah said in a speech over the weekend that the last two economic corridors "are in the final stages of planning and would be launched soon."

Other officials said the Sarawak development plan would be announced in January.

The government had previously launched three major big-spending master plans for the peninsular.

Abdullah kicked off the Eastern Coast Economic Corridor (ECER) in October -- a 12-year plan designed to attract about 33 billion dollars worth of investments for Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang and the district of Mersing in Johor state.

In July, he launched the 51 billion dollar Northern Corridor Economic Region master plan for the northern states of Perlis, Kedah, Penang and Perak over the next 18 years.

Earlier this year he also kicked off the Iskandar Development Region in southern Johor state which aims to capitalise on its proximity with neighbouring Singapore and turn the region into a new Asian metropolis.
