PKR MP lauds PM for allowing A- scorers in matric intake

A PKR lawmaker has lauded Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim over his cabinet's decision to allow all 2024 SPM students who scored 10As and above, including A-, into government matriculation programmes.

P Prabakaran said it was a progressive and prudent move to widen the opportunity for top SPM scorers regardless of their racial background.

"This was not only a brave decision but also reflects the government's commitment towards upholding justice, meritocracy and the future of Malaysia's youth.

"The move sends a clear signal that excellence has to be celebrated and appreciated by the country's system, without any racial or inequality barrier.

"I hope this policy will be executed in a transparent and fair manner based on the Madani spirit," the Batu MP said in a statement.

Prabakaran (above), who is a Malaysian Indian Transformation Unit (Mitra) official, was responding to the Education Ministry’s announcement yesterday.

The ministry said the cabinet had decided that all students who scored 10As and above, inclusive of A-, in the examinations will receive places in matriculation programmes regardless of their racial background.

On May 15, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek came under fire from MIC after it was found that the ministry had classified A and A- in SPM grades as below excellent.

MIC senator C Sivaraj cited official information on the new criteria that purportedly stipulated that only students who achieved at least 10As, consisting exclusively of A+ and A grades, qualify for automatic admission into government matriculation colleges.
