Plantations and Commodities Minister Johari Abdul Ghani has been named to assume the duties of the now vacant natural resources and environmental sustainability ministerial post.

Chief Secretary to the Government Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar today announced Johari’s appointment effective immediately. This comes after Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad officially ended his tenure as environment minister on July 4.

“The prime minister informed the cabinet meeting on July 9 that he had agreed for Johari Abdul Ghani, the plantations and commodities minister, to carry out the duties and functions of the natural resources and environmental sustainability minister effective immediately,” said Shamsul.

Last month, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim named Finance Minister II Amir Hamzah Azizan to carry out the duties and functions of the economy minister post, which was vacated by former PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli.

With Johari’s appointment, Umno currently has more full ministers in the cabinet. Johari is currently an Umno vice-president and also Titiwangsa MP.

PKR’s minister count was reduced after the resignations of both Rafizi and Nik Nazmi.

Nik Nazmi, who remains the Setiawangsa MP, has held the ministerial post since December 2023.

He said he decided to step down because he was not re-elected to the post of PKR vice-president after losing in the recent party elections in May.
