Cops to quiz all attendees of 'immoral' marriage motivation event

Police will summon all participants of a controversial marriage motivation programme accused of promoting immoral activities, as part of their ongoing probe into the incident.

Selangor police chief Hussein Omar Khan said statements will be recorded under Section 122 of the Criminal Procedure Code, following the opening of an inquiry paper.

“Further investigation has led to the case being classified under Section 294 and Section 509 of the Penal Code, as well as Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act.

“A thorough investigation will be carried out to identify the presence of any lewd elements or teachings that deviate from societal norms, as alleged,” he said in a statement today.

Section 294 of the Penal Code deals with obscene acts and songs, performed in a public place “to the annoyance of others” - punishable with imprisonment for up to three months, a fine, or both.

Section 509 of the Penal Code is related to the offence of intending to insult the modesty of a person through words, sounds, gestures, or objects.

Hussein added that investigations would be conducted comprehensively to ensure all aspects and allegations are evaluated fairly.

He also urged the public to be cautious when participating in any programme, activity, or workshop that has unclear objectives or is organised by unknown parties.

This came after Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari instructed the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) to investigate claims of immoral activities during the marriage motivation programme, held at a convention centre in Shah Alam.

Amirudin said the matter must be taken seriously, with firm action to follow if the allegations are proven to be true.
