Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) is aiming to gather 100,000 people next Sunday to hand a petition meant for Queen Elizabeth II through the British High Commission.

The petition will urge Her Majesty to appoint a Queen's Counsel to represent Malaysian Indians in a suit against the British government.

The one-million pound sterling for each of the two million Indian Malaysians suit, was filed by Ipoh-based lawyer P Waytha Moorthy who is also Hindraf chairperson.

Waytha Moorthy, in representing the entire Malaysian Indian community, filed the suit over Britain's alleged failure to protect the minority community's interest during independence talks.

Permit sought

Contacted by Malaysiakini , Waytha Moorthy said four most senior Indian citizens would be asked to represent the community and hand over the memorandum to the British High Commissioner.

"We've informed the High Commissioner of our intention to submit the petition a month ago, apologising that we had chosen a Sunday for this very significant event.

"We explained that the petitioners were the poor and underclass who could not afford to take a day off on a working day," he said.

Waytha Moorthy stressed that the gathering would purely by a peaceful assembly as allowed under Article 10 of the Federal Constitution and not a 'demonstration' nor a 'rally'.

"We have applied for a police permit for the event and our representatives were interviewed by the Cheras police yesterday," he added.

The assembly is expected to begin at 9am.
